week 2: Concepting

This week I fucused on concepting dressing room and some assets. I think I'm quicker and more efficient when I use 3d to show my ideas so after few days of struggling with painting I decided to do it that way.

Week 2: Final Fortune Teller Concepts and Tea room

This week I continued to concept and establish design for the fortune teller automaton. I then came up with the final design of her look, clothing and booth. Next I gathered some reference for tea rooms and concepted the Victorian style tea room that will be featured in the level.

Week 2 - Modularity and Whiteboxing

Week 2:

  • White boxed entire level to give understanding of location and level layout: (not to scale)

  • Modularity discussed and explained to team
  • Created concepts for modularity of theatre room to explain layout and how the level can break up:

  • Worked out that each tile would be 500x500 in unity
  • Set up perforce for team
  • Created Second whitebox using floor plan image provided by Holly Ellis using new 500x500 tiles to get scale and level plan correct:

Week 2 - Concepting The Alleyway

This week we all separated to concept one room/area each and I was in charge of whiteboxing and concepting the exterior and alleyway. I photo bashed one angle of the alleyway to give a clearer vision of what I saw for the alleyway as well as three line drawings of different perspectives

Week 2- Concepting and research

This week I continued researching contextual Victorian plays to help give depth to our theater. After this, I began concepting our Psycho automaton- which I need to create orthographics for. I also white-boxed a prop room based off of the artifacts room in the film the Conjuring. I chose to plan it out in this way as it made the room feel almost claustrophobic which will tie in with our creepy atmosphere.

Week 23 Conclusion

The first week of our project was used as a research week to fully found and solidify our ideas.

We researched not only the types of characters we wanted to focus on but also the context it would take to realize Victorian Britain.

Whilst some looked at the difference in building materials and techniques in creating them, others looked at how the interiors worked.

We also looked at cultural context such as who was popular at the time in terms of theater and how we could pull this context forward by use of props.

Our team heavily looked into automatons and how they worked rather than just their aesthetic so that when we modeled them,we had a fuller understanding of their workings.

This week allowed us to solidify our ideas and will help massively when we get to the modelling stage.

week 1: Research

After having few group meetings and brainstorming about all our ideas we decided to pick few that seemed most appropriate and create some moodboards and pinterest boards. One of my ideas was small pub/theatre in which low budged magician or illusionist would perform. My main reference was one of sets from 'Prestige' film.

Two screenshots of that 'Prestige' scene:

I also made a simple layout/concept of the place I was hoping to model:

Besides creating moodboards and pinterest boards I did some reading. Here's the book I managed to get in one of Leicester's second hand shops a while ago. It's full of photographs and drawings of various furniture and props. Lots of useful stuff that cannot be found anywhere on the internet, I'm hoping to find some free time to scan them so I don't have to carry this huge thing around.

Week 1 - Researching + Concepting the Fortune Teller

Week 1:
This week I looked specifically at fortune teller automatons. After gathering a good amount of research and creating a mood board with it, I then began some basic concept work to determine the look and feel of the character, finally deciding on the dark gypsy looking design; after which I went a little further and came up with some hand position ideas and props she might hold in them.
